Plumber, Drainer and Gasfitter Licences Explained

Queensland licenses plumbing and drainage work on two levels, and the QBCC grants both. A person doing the work needs an occupational licence, and a business taking the work on needs a contractor licence as well.

Each licence proves something different:

  1. Occupational licence

the holder has the trade skills for the work.

  2. Contractor licence

the business has the money and the business training to carry jobs.

  3. Plumber's licence

covers plumbing work, except work carrying a separate endorsement.

  4. Drainer's licence

covers drainage below ground level, with the same carve-out.

  5. Gas work licence

gas jobs sit apart, from installing pipework to certifying the finished system, and every one needs a licensed gasfitter.

Before gas work starts, owners can ask to see the gasfitter's licence. The QBCC also keeps public registers: a name search confirms a licence, and a street-address search turns up any Form 4 lodged for a property. Our gas fitter page covers the gas side of the trade.

Paperwork and Inspections After a Job

Two bodies share the checking. The QBCC licenses the trade and records notifiable work, while your local council approves applications, issues permits and inspects. Regulated jobs fall into permitted work, notifiable work and minor work, and only licensed plumbers or drainers may carry them out.

Here's the paperwork that reaches you:

  1. Form 4

After notifiable work, you or whoever booked the job gets a copy. Missing one? Ask the QBCC for it.

  2. Gas compliance certificate

When gas work on a new install or an alteration finishes, the gasfitter hands you the certificate straight away. Where a gas network feeds the system, a copy reaches the network operator within 5 days.

  3. Council inspection

You can ask the council to check notifiable jobs at any stage. An inspector may attend with the occupier's consent, if the council makes contact within 1 year of the notice reaching the QBCC.

Plumbing Across Neighbouring Suburbs

We work across Everton Hills and the suburbs around it. Arana Hills, Bunya and Keperra each have a dedicated page, and the run also covers McDowall, Mitchelton and Everton Park. Every street in the catchment is listed on the suburbs we cover page.

Regular rounds pass the Prince of Peace Lutheran College campus on Henderson Road and the homes backing onto the creek corridors. Acreage blocks on the western side come up as well.

Diagnose, Quote, Repair and Test

  1. 1

    Describe the Fault

Ring (07) 3523 6417 or send the form on the book a plumber page. A clear description helps us bring the right parts.

  2. 2

    Diagnose On Site

The plumber traces the fault and explains the cause in plain words before anything comes apart.

  3. 3

    Approve the Quote

You get a fixed quote before any work starts, with flat-rate pricing and no hidden fees. Nothing goes ahead until you sign off on the figure.

  4. 4

    Repair, Test and Hand Over

The work gets done, then tested: taps run, drains fill, gas lines hold pressure. Pay by card or EFTPOS on site once finished, or ask about Fix now, pay later. Any Form 4 or gas certificate goes home with you.

Plumbing Licence Questions

What's the difference between a plumber and a drainer?

Ground level is the dividing line. A plumber works the fixtures and pipework around the house, and a drainer handles drainage below ground, like the house drain out to the sewer connection.

What can I do if plumbing work in Everton Hills turns out faulty?

Raise it with the plumber who did the job first. If the work looks unlicensed, defective or non-compliant, or a Form 4 never arrived for notifiable work, lodge a complaint online with the QBCC.

Which suburbs around Everton Hills does the team work in?

The run covers Arana Hills, Bunya and Keperra, each with its own page, plus McDowall, Mitchelton and Everton Park. The full street-by-street catchment sits on the areas page of this site.

Do you work on units and rentals as well as houses?

Yes, houses are most of the work, but landlords, tenants and unit owners book us too. Who approves the job changes: a tenant answers to the property manager, and a unit owner to the body corporate.
